(Note: this page was created by someone who wasn't fully cognizant of the importance of avoiding technical terms that make no sense to wiki newcomers. To those who understand wikis: please feel free to de-"geekify" this a bit.)

This page describes the means to make most contributions to the CRS Longevity Wiki. For more comprehensive guide (still very much under development...), click here.

Editing

To edit any already existing page, simply click the "edit" tab at the top. A window will appear in which the "wikicode" for the page will be visible. "Wikicode" is actually identical to the text of the page you're trying to edit, with a very few exceptions -- for ex., words that are italicized in the text of the page you're editing won't appear as italicized in edit box (because the edit box can't display italics), instead, italicized words are surrounded by two single quotes on each side, like ''this''. (It might look like the word this is surrounded by double quotation marks, but it's actually two single quotation marks.)

Edit the text in the edit box (see below for a few basic formatting methods), and then click the "Preview Changes" tab to make sure there are no errors. If you approve of what appears when you click "Preview Changes," then fill in the "Summary" box with a basic description of the change, and click "Save Page". Linking

To other parts of the wiki

You can create a link to any other articles (or "modules") in this book simply by putting the name of the module in double square brackets, like this [[Guidelines]], which looks like this: Guidelines.

To Wikipedia

If you want to link to Wikipedia, use this format: {{w|Vitamins}}, which looks likw this: Vitamins. However, we believe there is little reason to link to Wikipedia. If a topic needs to be made into a link, it can be created as a page here. If it seems like it doesn't belong here, it probably shouldn't be turned into a link.

To outside websites

Generally, links to outside websites should be in the form of citations (see below) if they pertain to specific parts of the text, or else in the "External Links" section at the bottom of each page, if they pertain to the page content more generally. For the rare situation in which neither of these apply, a link to an external site can be embedded into the text like this: [http://www.website.com example site], which will look like this: example site.

Headings

Section headings are formed in the wiki code simply by putting equals signs on either side of the heading text, like this:

==Main heading==
===Submain heading===
====Subsubmain heading====

Citation style and references

While the wikimedia software supports several methods of citing references, only one is used in the Longevity wiki: embedded into the wiki code, immediately following the text that requires a cititation, is the following code: <ref>text of citation</ref>, which, in the redered page, simply leaves a number like this: <ref>text of reference</ref>. At the bottom of the module, a single code (</references> calls down all the citations, in the order cited, and automatically numbers them; see the Citing sources for more details, and rationale.

New modules (aka pages)

The easiest way is to first create a new table-of-contents entry for the new module on its parent module. Then try to click thru to red link on the parent module and Wikibooks engine will offer you the option of creating a new module. Choose that option and then enter the new content into the empty edit window provided. Most convenient will be to edit a similar page, copy its wiki code, and then paste it as a template into the edit window of the new module. Make liberal use of the "Show preview" button before saving the page. To create a new module, you must have an account (it's free!) and be logged in.

Images

Q: "I want to upload an image for my recipe. How do I do that?"

A:

1. Click on "Upload file" to the left (under toolbox), and follow the instructions for uploading the image. (Don't worry about what subdirectory it ends up in on the wiki; it doesn't matter. See next.)

2. Go to the edit box for your recipe (or any other page), and type in [[Image:Megamuffins.jpg]] (if the image is called "Megamuffins.jpg") where you want the image to appear.
